To start, students will work only on balance by moving the marble through the figure 8 and waves on the board. As basic movements are mastered, progressions can be added to introduce academic content. Student's can work on teacher provided content with a partner using flash cards or from the smart board. 

Helicopter Spin

The vestibular system includes the parts of the inner ear and brain that help control balance, eye movement and spatial orientation. This system helps to keep students stable and upright. If your student has trouble with body awareness, (Sensory system: the vestibular system) or balance (sensory system: the proprioceptive system) they will often struggle with classroom activities such as letter and number formation, handwriting, copying from the board and tying their shoes.

Crawl Through Tunnel

This tunnel can be rearranged as a tunnel for children to crawl through or as a path for children to walk on. This flexibility offers limitless creative environments! Sensory Snake

Children experience pressure touch and proprioceptive input while sensory snake molds to their body. It can be easily used in a classroom, worn around the neck, or across the lap. The sensory snake may also be warmed in the microwave (using 20 sec. intervals to achieve desired warmth) or cooled in the freezer (using 5-10 minute intervals to achieve desired coolness) for added sensory input.

Learning Assessment Steps

[Pre K - 2nd Grade] ABL Assessment steps are used in the ABL Learning Lab at the early elementary level. Children begin by walking up and down stairs and increase difficulty using progressions as laid out in the ABL Lab Manual. As children advance, they hold various objects to engage the full body while encouraging balance, proprioception, crossing the midline, and motor skills. More advanced learners will be able to utilize the ABL Academic Card Sets as part of the Assessment Steps Station to anchor learning and improve retention and memory retrieval in the classroom.

Learning Platform Steps

[3rd - 6th Grade] ABL Platform steps are used in the ABL Learning Lab for ages 3rd through 6th grade. The platform steps are triple the size and manufactured for heavy duty, high frequency use. One side of the stairs offers large platform steps for increased stride length while the other side offers 6 smaller steps to challenge balance and spatial awareness. The sturdy solid wood frame is the perfect way for students to practice the 12 foundations of learning readiness.

Balance Beam

The balance beam enables kids to be challenged while improving balance and coordination. Kids improve vestibular balance, movement coordination, and concentration while understanding their body's center of gravity. The balance beam also helps to improve self-confidence, learning stability, and sense of reaction. Each unit is equipped with the ability to add another beam on each end thus allowing facility operators to make the beam as long as they need.

The balance rope is 6' long. The 2" round polypropylene rope provides a more challenging walking surface than a traditional flat beam, increasing the balance difficulty for all ages.

Why are gross motor skills important?

Gross motor skills are important to enable children to perform everyday functions, such as walking, running, skipping as well as playground skills (e.g. climbing) and sporting skills (e.g. catching, throwing and hitting a ball with a bat). These are crucial for everyday self-care skills like dressing (where you need to be able to stand on one leg to put your leg into a pant leg without falling over).

Gross motor abilities also have an influence on other everyday functions. For example, a child's ability to maintain table top posture (upper body support) will affect their ability to participate in fine motor skills (e.g. writing, drawing, and cutting) and sitting upright to attend to class instruction, which then impacts on their academic learning. Gross motor skills impact on your endurance to cope with a full day of school (sitting upright at a desk, moving between classrooms, carrying your heavy school bag).

Rhythm Drums

Hearing and keeping a steady beat develops the internal dialogue - that little voice inside your head. This inner dialogue starts around 3-5 years old by hearing/listening to human voices (talk, sing, pitch). Internal dialogue is necessary for acquiring receptive and expressive language.

USE AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR SET-UP

This is a unique material designed for heavy duty, high frequency use.

The material is designed to keep the shape it was stored in, and will become flexible with heat. Upon unboxing, unroll the mat and lie flat (preferably outside) in the sun or a warm environment. As the mat heats, the material will become flexibile and bend easily in to the preferred state, flat. Remember, whatever shape the mat cools off in, is the shape it will keep! Ensure your mat is lying completely flat as it is cooling off, in order to keep the crisp flat shape.
