Integrating Movement with Academics in the ABL Lab

To start, students will work only on balance by moving the marble through the figure 8 and waves on the board. As basic movements are mastered, progressions can be added to introduce academic content. Student's can work on teacher provided content with a partner using flash cards or from the smart board. 

Balance Beam

The balance beam enables kids to be challenged while improving balance and coordination. Kids improve vestibular balance, movement coordination, and concentration while understanding their body's center of gravity. The balance beam also helps to improve self-confidence, learning stability, and sense of reaction. This Advanced Balance Path, inspired by rippling sand, stimulates a tactile balance. This path has a specially designed large degree of twist and tilt, alternating the position of the base to create different heights for various challenges. Use the log and path pieces to adjust height and difficulty in this pathway.

Ends of the path pieces are inclined in different directions to offer options. This path has no completely flat sides and offers a challenge to children while climbing as more concentration is needed. The rippled texture of the path can provide tactile input as well as grip while climbing and walking.

The balance rope is 6' long. The 2" round polypropylene rope provides a more challenging walking surface than a traditional flat beam, increasing the balance difficulty for all ages.

Why are gross motor skills important?

Gross motor skills are important to enable children to perform everyday functions, such as walking, running, skipping as well as playground skills (e.g. climbing) and sporting skills (e.g. catching, throwing and hitting a ball with a bat). These are crucial for everyday self-care skills like dressing (where you need to be able to stand on one leg to put your leg into a pant leg without falling over).

Gross motor abilities also have an influence on other everyday functions. For example, a child's ability to maintain table top posture (upper body support) will affect their ability to participate in fine motor skills (e.g. writing, drawing, and cutting) and sitting upright to attend to class instruction, which then impacts on their academic learning. Gross motor skills impact on your endurance to cope with a full day of school (sitting upright at a desk, moving between classrooms, carrying your heavy school bag).
