YWCA Lubbock, Implementing Action Based Learning Labs - Lubbock, TX
Share
The YWCA of Lubbock recently established an Action Based Learning Lab designed to improve childhood development by integrating physical activity with academic instruction.
Spearheaded by Tammy Schilling, an expert in kinesiology with over 19 years in education, this initiative uses specialized equipment to stimulate brain function and enhance motor skills across numerous school sites. As Director of After School Programming, Schilling recognized the profound impact that purposeful movement can have on cognitive, physical, and emotional development.
“Our vision is simple yet profound: to give every child a head start in life through the power of movement. By laying a solid foundation of motor skills and cognitive function early on, we equip children with the tools they need to excel academically, socially, and beyond." (Tammy Schilling, Ph. D).
The program focuses on the link between purposeful movement and improved cognitive abilities, helping students manage their energy and focus more effectively in the classroom. By fostering holistic growth, the lab aims to provide children with a developmental head start that supports long-term academic and social success.
Ultimately, this mission seeks to revolutionize traditional learning environments through multisensory experiences that benefit a child's overall health and educational journey.

How Action Based Learning Prepares Kids for School
Action Based Learning (ABL) environments are intentionally designed to support the developmental skills students need to thrive in school. From preschoolers building the balance, coordination, and self-regulation skills needed for classroom readiness to older students strengthening focus, memory, and executive functioning, Action Based Learning prepares students to be more engaged and successful learners. Through purposeful movement and multisensory experiences, students activate the brain in ways that improve attention, support cognitive development, and create stronger connections for learning. Research continues to show that when movement is intentionally integrated into the learning environment, students are better able to regulate their energy, sustain attention, and retain new information.
