Crawl Through Tunnel

This tunnel can be rearranged as a tunnel for children to crawl through or as a path for children to walk on. This flexibility offers limitless creative environments! The balance rope is 6' long. The 2" round polypropylene rope provides a more challenging walking surface than a traditional flat beam, increasing the balance difficulty for all ages.

Why are gross motor skills important?

Gross motor skills are important to enable children to perform everyday functions, such as walking, running, skipping as well as playground skills (e.g. climbing) and sporting skills (e.g. catching, throwing and hitting a ball with a bat). These are crucial for everyday self-care skills like dressing (where you need to be able to stand on one leg to put your leg into a pant leg without falling over).

Gross motor abilities also have an influence on other everyday functions. For example, a child's ability to maintain table top posture (upper body support) will affect their ability to participate in fine motor skills (e.g. writing, drawing, and cutting) and sitting upright to attend to class instruction, which then impacts on their academic learning. Gross motor skills impact on your endurance to cope with a full day of school (sitting upright at a desk, moving between classrooms, carrying your heavy school bag).

Learning Assessment Steps

[Pre K - 2nd Grade] ABL Assessment steps are used in the ABL Learning Lab at the early elementary level. Children begin by walking up and down stairs and increase difficulty using progressions as laid out in the ABL Lab Manual. As children advance, they hold various objects to engage the full body while encouraging balance, proprioception, crossing the midline, and motor skills. ABL CALMING CART 

Action Based Learning Mobile Carts offer schools more flexibility to implement Action Based Learning Strategies without compromising space and budget. Carts provide ABL equipment and support materials content specific for the elementary level to assist educators in integrating academics with purposeful movement.

The purpose of this cart is to provide tools for students in need of self regulation and to reset their emotional state. Students will eventually recognize which tools work best for them and when is a good time to use them.

This cart can be used as a whole class/group. Place the cones around your space where you will put the equipment and or materials. There are 10 cones, so you can have up to 10 stations. Feel free to add more as you need. Find the corresponding Station Cards and place them in the slot at the tip of the cone. Model the expectations and proper use for each station. Model how you will have the students rotate through the stations. Instructors can use the timers from the set the duration for the stations. This could be anywhere between 1 and 3 minutes.

After modeling the expected use of each activity, students can be directed to use the calming cart when they are demonstrating behavior that is escalating; (overly excited, frustrated, sad, angry, etc). This can be done by themselves or with the supervision of another adult.
