The 1st YMCA in Illinois to Implement Action Based Learning Youth Fitness Equipment

Getting Started with Action Based Learning

This journey that YMCA Streator began with the help of Ken Beutke, Wellness Coordinator and Shannon Karback, Director of the YMCA, with the idea to create a space where youth could engage in physical activity while still enjoying it. Recognizing the rise in youth obesity and health issues, the opportunity came to provide a solution that appealed to both children and parents. By integrating electronic equipment and interactive games, They aimed to make physical activity fun and accessible for all.

YMCA STREATOR MISSION

“In our ongoing mission to promote health and wellness within our community, we're excited to share our latest venture: the integration of Action Based Learning (ABL) equipment at our facility. This was a significant step forward in our efforts to combat sedentary lifestyles among youth and foster a culture of active living for all ages.” Ken Beutke, Wellness Coordinator

“We're committed to monitoring maintenance needs and exploring further integration of ABL activities into various programs and age groups. Our goal is to continue evolving and adapting to meet the changing needs of our community while staying true to our mission of promoting health and wellness for all." Shannon Karback, Executive Director of Streator YMCA

Unique Benefits ABL Offers

“While each piece of ABL equipment offers unique benefits, YMCA Streator has noticed a particular enthusiasm for interactive equipment like the snowboarder and boomerboards. These activities not only engage children physically, but also foster teamwork and cooperation.

The Goals Created to Implement ABL

Their ultimate goal with the introduction of ABL equipment is to promote a healthier lifestyle for children and families within their community. They hope to see increased utilization of the space, positive social interactions among children, and potential improvements in academic performance and health outcomes. By making physical activity enjoyable and accessible, YMCA Streator aim to create a ripple effect that extends beyond our facility walls. They believe that by instilling healthy habits at a young age, they can empower children to lead happier, healthier lives.

The Future Plans to Integrate ABL

Stay tuned for updates as we track the progress of our ABL program and celebrate the achievements of our children as they embark on this journey to a healthier, happier future. Together, we can make a difference, one step – or boomerboard jump – at a time.
